How do I know if I’m a good candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

The Palomar MAX-R is so advanced that it can treat the lightest to the darkest of skins, making most people excellent candidates. Your aesthetician will go through a medical history form with you, to ensure you are a suitable candidate for this treatment.

How does it work?

The laser light is attracted to the pigment in your hair called melanin. When the melanin absorbs the light from the laser, it converts it into heat energy. As the laser pulses light on to the skin, this converted heat energy travels down the hair shaft and damages the hair follicle’s ability to regrow. In order to destroy the hair, it is important to treat each follicle during the growth cycle. This is why multiple removal treatments are required, even though you will see a significant improvement after only just one treatment. Think of it as a new and improved intense pulse light or IPL hair removal.

How long does the treatment take?

The Palomar MAX-R is the world’s fastest hair removal! Depending on the area to be treated, treatment time varies.

What should I expect during a treatment?

The first step of hair removal is to prepare the skin. Your treatment area will first be closely shaved, ensuring maximum penetration of the laser to destroy the hair follicle. Your treatment area will then be assessed with the Skintel Melanin Reader. See ‘Safety’ for more information. Once your active melanin reading is known, your aesthetician will determine the ideal settings for your treatment. Depending on your treatment area, either a white eyeliner or yellow highlighter may be used to mark out the section to be treated.

During the treatment, you will feel intense pulsed light of the laser against your skin. The MAX-R Laser has a unique patented cooling system for the ultimate client comfort. Your skin is cooled on contact with the laser before it pulses, not only ensuring a more comfortable treatment but also a safer treatment. Your aesthetician can also adjust the settings and speed of the treatment to ensure your comfort. The sensation can be described as a rubber band flicking the area.

How many treatments do I need?

The Palomar MAX-R is so advanced that typically you will only need 4-6 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, to achieve permanent hair reduction.

Areas of hair growth that are affected by hormones may vary.

Most patients find that they have some areas of permanent hair removal, while other areas require 6-12 monthly top-up treatments.

What can I expect after a treatment?

After your treatment, it is very important that you apply sunscreen to your treated area for at least 2 weeks after your treatment.

You may experience minimal erythema (redness) and/or edema (swelling) immediately following your treatment and may also notice some perifollicular edema (redness and swelling of the hair follicle) that can last for as little as a few minutes or up to a few hours. It is suggested that you do not exercise, including swimming, for 24 hours after your treatment. You should also avoid exposure to heat including hot baths/showers, saunas etc.

After your treatment, your hairs will appear to ‘grow’ back at about half the rate they usually grow. What is actually happening is the hair is being expelled until it can be removed. The hairs will either fall out themselves or can be aided with a washcloth in the shower. This will generally take around 2 weeks and then you will notice a lighter, finer hair grow back. Although you can remove some hairs with your fingers or by plucking, be careful not to remove any that give resistance, you will have to wait for the hair to die on your next treatment

Do I need to prepare?

Before your treatment, you must avoid the sun for 2-4 weeks. As we live in Australia, this is a near impossible task! Ensure you are not actively tanning, and be sure to wear SPF 30+ to your treatment area at least 2 weeks prior to your treatment if you cannot avoid sun exposure.

For your first treatment, it is ideal that you come with at least 1-3mm of hair growth so that your aesthetician can assess the hair colour, thickness and density for ideal treatment settings. Besides shaving, do not use any other form of hair removal for 4-6 weeks prior to your treatment.

Safety

The Taylor Clinic takes the following safety precautions during all hair removal treatments:

– Before proceeding with your treatment, you will be required to fill in a medical history form. This is so we can ensure that you are a suitable candidate, and are not currently on any medications that may affect your treatment.
– Before commencing your treatment, your aesthetician will perform a test patch on your skin. This is to ensure your skin reacts ideally, with no adverse reactions.
– Our staff all hold current Laser Safety Certificates, have science backgrounds, have been trained directly by Palomar Medical Technologies; and have had the experience to know how your skin should look during a Laser Hair Removal treatment.
– During your treatment, your aesthetician will provide you with the appropriate eyewear. Additionally, you will be in a ‘Laser Safe’ room, with no reflective surfaces.

Technology

In the late 1990s, Palomar was the first company to obtain clearances from the FDA (Federal Drug Administration – http://www.fda.gov/) for high powered, professional laser systems for Hair Reduction.
