Collagen is the substance in our bodies that keeps our skin looking as youthful and smooth as a baby’s bottom! As we age, our bodies naturally produce less and less collagen. Laser skin resurfacing can:

– Restore collagen in your skin, giving a refreshed, younger look
– Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
– Improve sun damage
– Improve scars- acne, surgical and incidental
– Tighten skin

Non-ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing is a comfortable treatment with fast recovery, allowing you to treat more aggressively with less down time.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

With the Palomar Lux 1540, all skin types can be treated safely with minimal to no risk of side effects. This both prevents the visible signs of aging and can reduce or illuminate already visible imperfections.

How does it work?

Our bodies have a fantastic healing mechanism. When we injure ourselves, we are able to produce new cells to replace the old cells. Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing works on this principal, targeting a fraction of our skin. By producing thousands of microscopic columns of treated area, surrounded by healthy untreated tissue, the laser triggers a healing response. This treated area is in the dermis where collagen and elastin fibres are found, so our body naturally produces new collagen and elastin fibres through its automatic healing response. By producing new collagen and elastin fibres, the layers of the skin are pushed up to even out any imperfections on the surface such as lines or scars. This creates an even texture on the surface, and produces new collagen and elastin fibres within the dermis which prolongs the signs of aging.

How long does the resurfacing take?

Depending on the area to be treated, typically a Fractional Laser treatment takes around an hour.

What should I expect during a treatment?

The first step of your Fractional Laser treatment is to prepare by cleansing and drying your skin. If requested (at no extra charge) a topical numbing cream can be applied to ensure extra comfort during your treatment. With this numbing cream, most patients describe the discomfort level no more than a 4/10. Once the skin is prepared, your aesthetician will begin to pulse the laser over your skin. Depending on your concern, you may receive one or several passes to the same area. Target areas may receive extra passes to the rest of your skin.

How many treatments do I need?

Generally, you will need 3-6 Fractional Laser treatments, spaced around 4 weeks apart, to see the optimum results. This depends on your concern and can be discussed during your consultation.

What can I expect afterwards?

After your treatment, you can expect your skin to react similarly to a mild to moderate sun burn. Immediately after your treatment, you will experience mild erythema (redness) and edema (swelling) which aids in the collagen production process. This edema can typically last up to 5 days. After the first day, the treated area will feel slightly rough for around 7-10 days, followed by a new, smooth emerging skin.

While you will see results within the first week, the collagen induction process starts at around the 4 to 6-week mark and continues for up to 12 months. This means you will see immediate results which will continue to improve with the months to come.

Do I need to prepare?

Before your treatment, you must avoid the sun for 2-4 weeks. As we live in Australia, this is a near impossible task! Ensure you are not actively tanning, and be sure to wear SPF 30+ to your treatment area at least 2 weeks prior to your treatment if you cannot avoid sun exposure.

Safety

The Taylor Clinic takes the following safety precautions during all Fractional Laser treatments:

– Before proceeding with your Fractional Laser treatment, you will be required to fill in a medical history form. This is so we can ensure that you are a suitable candidate, and are not currently on any medications that may affect your treatment.
– Before commencing your treatment, your aesthetician will perform a test patch on your skin. This is to ensure your skin reacts ideally, with no adverse reactions.
– Our staff all hold current Laser Safety Certificates, have science backgrounds, have been trained directly by Palomar Medical Technologies; and have had the experience to know how your skin should look during an IPL treatment.
– During your treatment, your aesthetician will provide you with the appropriate eyewear. Additionally, you will be in a ‘Laser Safe’ room, with no reflective surfaces.
